AKC Canine Good Citizen Testing (AKC CGC) – The AKC CGC is part of the AKC Family Dog Program, and many dog owners choose CGC as their first steps in training their dogs. The CGC program offers many practical advantages too. The CGC award is a prerequisite for many therapy dog groups. Some homeowner’s insurance companies encourage CGC testing, and an increasing number of apartments and condos require that resident dogs pass the CGC test. The tagline of the CGC program is, “Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs,” and that is what CGC is all about. The CGC is a ten part test that can be viewed at
AKC Community Dog (AKC CGCA) –  AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. To test for Community Canine the dog must have a recorded CGC with the American Kennel Club. As with CGC, AKC Community Canine has a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title. This is a title that appears on the dog’s title record at AKC. To earn the AKC Community Canine title, dogs must meet the following two requirements:
  1. The CGC test and the AKC Community Canine test may be taken on the same day. However, when taken on the same day, both forms should be sent to AKC in one envelope so the CGC can be entered first.
  2. Must have an AKC number of one of 3 types (AKC registration number, PAL number, or AKC Canine Partners number). All dogs, including mixed breeds, can get an AKC number. The reason for the AKC number requirement is that this is how we create titles at AKC; we attach the titles to the dog’s number.
Therapy Dog Testing – The Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc. is a National nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization which evaluates, tests, trains and qualifies owners and their well behaved dogs as therapy dog teams. These teams give unconditional love, boost self-esteem, and relieve loneliness and boredom. Therapy dogs go to nursing home, hospitals, rehab facilities, schools, or any where therapy dogs are needed. To learn more about therapy dogs or the Therapy Test check out their website at
